The spring has finally arrived and one of the signs of it is the punks. Yeah, you did read it correctly, the punks. We live close by a river Isar and it is a beautiful place to do BBQ and meet your friends when the weather gets warmer, but the punks arrive already as soon as the temperature goes over +10. They have their dedicated spot under one of the bridges where they listen the music and drink beer. And cause havocs... Or at least some people think they do ;).
Punk can also be found from the fashion world. A annual ball that celebrates the annual opening of the Metropolitan Museum's fashion exhibit at the Costume Insitute (known as a MET ball) in New York has this years exhibition entitled as “Punk: Chaos To Couture” (http://metmuseum.org/exhibitions/listings/2013/punk).
KAKSITVÅ (means TwoTwo, kaksi is two in Finnish and tva is two in Swedish http://www.kaksitva.com/) is a Finnish design company set up by two Punks; Piia Keto and Marjo Kuusinen. They say that Punk is much more to them than just music; it’s about values and attitudes. And that is exactly what KAKSITVÅ is: ethical and ecological. For them it is clear that things are done so that people or animals don’t suffer and that everyone is happy. So it's no for the fur...
They do much more than clothing and they design basically whatever is asked from them. Personally what I think is cool, is that they have done outfits for the Helsinki Roller Derby girls (http://www.kaksitva.com/ox_portfolio/helsinki-roller-derby/ ) and if they could they would make clothing for the Finnish national ice-hockey team J. I mean, how cool would that be? Especially if they would look anything like the ones made for the Roller Derby girls ;)
KAKSITVÅ has so far done 12 collections and the collections include bags, jewelry, accessories and apparel. They latest collection for spring/summer 2013 is collect “Pura vida” and it is about dusky colored patterns (http://www.kaksitva.com/ox_portfolio/springsummer-2013-pura-vida/). The big prints are not really me, but I do like this T-shirt: http://www.kaksitva.com/product/bird-t-shirt-women/ and I also do like the price of it :) What do you think?
Cheers for now,
While doing my master thesis last year about "Awareness and demand of Finnish fashion in Europe" I noticed not that many people really know that Finland does have cool fashion too. So the purpose of this blog is share my findings of the Finnish fashion with everyone. Not just the things I found when doing my thesis but also things that keep popping up, as we all know, fashion is changing itself all the time...
Have you ever heard about Mai Niemi? No? Well, she has been invited to FIT on 25th of Aprl 2013 (Fashion Institute of Technology, in New York http://www.fitnyc.edu/10070.asp#Taking) to talk about her company Finnish fairytale and how her design has been influenced by Finnish saga Kalevala (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalevala). She will also present her current knitwear and accessories design. Now you may wonder what kind of stuff she does. Well, think about sagas and vikings, then you will get the idea :) My favourite for sure is this scarf http://shop.mainiemi.com/tuotekuvat/900x600/Sotkatar_valkea.jpg made from 100% wool.
Check it out yourself and let me know what you think: http://shop.mainiemi.com/
Cheers for now,
